There were reports in the Kanto region that cherry blossoms would be in full bloom by mid-March, but due to the subsequent cold weather, blooming was delayed, leading to the rare occurrence of cherry blossoms lingering until the start of the school season.
In Sendai, Tohoku, where cherry blossoms are now reaching full bloom, Futahashira Shrine, dedicated to the deities Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto, known as the gods of matchmaking, is distributing specially designed paper-cut stamp seals featuring beautiful cherry blossoms this spring. Futahashira Shrine, where many people visit daily to pray, is introducing the paper-cut stamp seals produced by our company this time.
Introduction to Futahashira Shrine
Futahashira Shrine, located in Izumi Ward of Sendai, is a shrine known for its blessings related to matchmaking and safe childbirth. It is easily accessible by car, but if you’re using public transportation, you can take the Tozai Line from Sendai Station to Hachibōjime Station, then head north along the Ōshū Kaidō (Ōshū Highway). After crossing the Nakakita River, you’ll find the approach and torii gate leading to the shrine. Pass through the gate and continue straight to reach Futahashira Shrine.
The enshrined deities are Izanagi-no-Mikoto and Izanami-no-Mikoto. The term “hashira” refers to counting deities, thus, as two deities are enshrined, the shrine is named “Futahashira Shrine.” Izanagi and Izanami are known for their role as a married couple who gave birth to the land and numerous gods. They are revered as deities of matchmaking, governing the love between men and women.
The establishment of Futahashira Shrine dates back to the ancient year of 1026, during a time when Sendai was referred to as Mutsu Province. In 2026, the shrine will celebrate its 1000th anniversary, and commemorative projects such as the renovation of the precincts are underway.
Paper-cut stamp seals for spring 2024

The seasonal limited edition paper-cut stamp seals distributed from April 1st feature a design with beautiful cherry blossoms and vibrant butterflies dancing. The paper-cutting uses “torinoko-shi” paper, which gives an elegant impression reminiscent of Japanese paper.
The backing board is covered with tracing paper printed to evoke the image of a blue sky, depicting cherry blossoms blooming vigorously under the clear sky. It’s a splendid stamp that beautifully captures the feeling of the end of winter and the vibrant arrival of spring.
In front of the main hall of Futahashira Shrine, there is a large double-flowered cherry blossom tree. It blooms later than Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms, but its softly rounded flowers are very impressive when in full bloom.
Another characteristic of this cherry blossom tree is that it blooms for a relatively long period. When you visit the shrine at this time of year, you can enjoy both the paper-cut stamp seal and the real cherry blossoms.
